Kaila’s Flower Farm is located in northern Ontario Canada. Seasonality is the corner stone of this homestead based farm. I work full time growing our food, preserving the harvest, embracing the beauty and feeding my family.
My journey into flower farming
I was born in Sudbury Ontario in 1983. I have 2 younger sisters Chelsey and Jodi (passed). I was a young mom at 17 and have a son “Ethan” from a previous relationship.
My younger years I spent summers on my grandparents strawberry farm, in Estaire on Elbow Ridge Road. All of my fondest memories were at my grandparents farm and my current farm, is heavily influenced by those early years.
As a young mom I was thrust into growing up very quickly, that lead to college for dental assisting and a subsequent career in that field for 10 years. The universe aligned and when my son went to spend time with his father, I took the chance to explore my childhood dreams of living in the bush. I moved and lived in a off-grid meme like cabin in 2012.
The homesteading lifestyle bit me hard and everything snowballed quickly, a garden, meat rabbits, chickens, sheep, geese, turkeys, emus, and recently dairy goats and cattle. While I had no running water or internet I still had my youth and passion to grow my own food, was reignited.
In 2014 I met Nathan and we were a perfect match, he brought with him two beautiful daughters Aurora and Meadow. He grew up homeschooled and was recently divorced. I was a dreadheaded homesteader, growing my own food.
The years spent living off grid my neighbours became my best friends. I learnt how to garden, how to work with nature, and how to feed the soil. Others that came before me shared their experiences however I still had to learn many things the hard way. I worked a few different jobs during this time that fit with my new found vigorous homesteading lifestyle. Carpenters labourer, golf course manager and administrator assistant, all teaching me skills that transferred directly into running a farm.
In 2018, Nathan and I stumbled on our current farm out of pure luck. At this time my son decided to move back home with me, after spending 10 years with his dad. Once again the universe aligned. Nathan and I bought our dream property and moved to the small town of Field.
Nathan started work at the Au Chateau. He is a passionate nurse and cares deeply about the residents. We decided I would stay home and work the farm and property full time. It just made sense for us, our goals as a couple, and family. What did I bring from my old cabin homestead? All of my bearded Iris’, Yes! All of my animals, also Yes!
Our new 12 acre farm on a hill had not been used as a farm in many decades. I immediately built coops, stalls in the barn and put in gardens. I planted trees and my bearded Iris’. We had just started to settle into the new farm when the pandemic hit.
Small weddings were common and a friend needed flowers for her wedding. I had flowers. I have always been public sharing about my homesteading journey and all the beauty and hardships of it. Pictures of my gardens and flower beds were popular on my Facebook page. People wanted flowers and I wanted nothing more then to share my flowers with my community.
Bringing beauty and smiles during uncertain times was what I, and our farm was meant to do.
Many parts of homesteading and life are difficult, sad or very joyous. Flowers have become the way I can share the farms beauty while bringing smiles to the faces of my community.
